In the vapor of your breath
The moment when all things come together. Memories play out in your mind and you smile. The words of the song move you deeply. A tear forms in gratitude. You feel infinitely small in this universe. You know there is more than the eye can see.
In this moment, the airplane had been in flight for about 5 hours as we crossed the ocean. The night sky was dark and all that shone were the stars in my small window. Everyone was asleep. The song began to play
"God of creation
There at the start
Before the beginning of time
With no point of reference
You spoke to the dark
And fleshed out the wonder of light
And as You speak
A hundred billion galaxies are born
In the vapor of Your breath the planets form
If the stars were made to worship so will I
I can see Your heart in everything You’ve made
Every burning star
A signal fire of grace
If creation sings Your praises so will I
God of Your promise
You don’t speak in vain
No syllable empty or void
For once You have spoken
All nature and science
Follow the sound of Your voice
And as You speak
A hundred billion creatures catch Your breath
Evolving in pursuit of what You said
If it all reveals Your nature so will I
I can see Your heart in everything You say
Every painted sky
A canvas of Your grace
If creation still obeys You so will I
So will I
So will I
If the stars were made to worship so will I
If the mountains bow in reverence so will I
If the oceans roar Your greatness so will I
For if everything exists to lift You high so will I
If the wind goes where You send it so will I
If the rocks cry out in silence so will I
If the sum of all our praises still falls shy
Then we’ll sing again a hundred billion times
God of salvation
You chased down my heart
Through all of my failure and pride
On a hill You created
The light of the world
Abandoned in darkness to die
And as You speak
A hundred billion failures disappear
Where You lost Your life so I could find it here
If You left the grave behind You so will I
I can see Your heart in everything You’ve done
Every part designed in a work of art called love
If You gladly chose surrender so will I
I can see Your heart
Eight billion different ways
Every precious one
A child You died to save
If You gave Your life to love them so will I
Like You would again a hundred billion times
But what measure could amount to Your desire
You’re the One who never leaves the one behind

So Will I lyrics © Capitol Christian Music Group}
Days before I had been on the top of Mt. Haleakala, in Maui, Hawaii stargazing. It felt surreal. The milky way with it's amazing haze across the dark night. The rings around saturn only seen clearly through the telescope. The Galaxies. The stars. Breathtakingly amazing. Clusters of stars shining like diamonds in the sky.
My daughter leaned over and said, "Have you heard the song So Will I?" Yes! I ran though the words I knew and we had a brief moment of reverence to the greatness that you can see God in everything. We hummed a few verses. I smiled inside.
It wasn't until after we were off the mountain that I truly appreciated every word this writer expressed. It all hit home as I flew across the dark sky days later, when all I could see once again were the stars, his creation to light the way.
Go ahead - download the song. Look at the amazing sky, wherever you happen to be, and be amazing and stand in awe of a God who created the universe, yet also created you. He knows your name, he knows the hairs on your head and he knew you before you were knitted in your mothers womb. Amazing. He can be seen in nature and in everything if you simply look.
The crazy thing is before I left Hawaii, this song didn't complete the download so I shouldn't have had it to listen to on the airplane, yet somehow it was there in the wee hours of darkness to play over and over for me in a moment of stillness and reverence.
The next day, I tried to call it up on my phone and it said it had not completed it's download :) Which made those moments even more magical.
A tear or gratitude forms every time I hear the song. Even reading the written words. Life is precious. My prayer for you is that you see his goodness in all things. Close your eyes. Listen to his words. He speaks in mysterious and magical ways.
